GET STARTED

What are the steps when filing a personal tax return?

Collect all relevant documents that show your income for the tax year. This includes examples such as T4 slips (employment income), T5 slips (investment income), T3 slips (income from trusts), and other relevant forms.

Please refer to our insights page which includes a checklist.

Establish your residency status in Canada for provincial and federal tax purposes.

Report all sources of income, including employment income, self-employment income, rental income, investment income, and any other sources.

Deductions and credits can help reduce your taxable income and overall tax liability. Some common deductions and credits include:

    • Basic personal amount: A non-refundable tax credit that reduces your tax based on your income.
    • Medical expenses: Deductible medical expenses that exceed a certain threshold.
    • Charitable donations: Credits for donations made to registered charities.
    • Tuition and education credits: Credits for eligible tuition fees and education amounts.
    • Childcare expenses: Deductions for childcare costs.
    • RRSP contributions: Deductions for contributions to Registered Retirement Savings Plans.
    • Homebuyer’s amount: A credit for first-time homebuyers.
    • Disability tax credit: A credit for individuals with disabilities.

Attach relevant supporting documents and receipts for deductions and credits claimed.

Choose a method for filing your tax return. You can file electronically using tax software, through the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) online services, or by mailing a paper return.

If you owe taxes after calculating your return, ensure that you make the payment by the tax deadline. Late payments may incur penalties and interest.

If you have overpaid your taxes throughout the year, you may be eligible for a tax refund. Refunds can be deposited directly into your bank account.

After filing, you will receive a Notice of Assessment from the CRA, which outlines the outcome of your return, any adjustments made, and your final tax liability or refund.

Tax preparers handle sensitive personal information, so maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards is crucial.
